Homework in the IB PYP should be used to enhance the Units of Inquiry and re-enforce the key skills and concepts that have been taught at school. This will mean that students may need to spend time at home continuing their research and inquiry. It is recognized that homework is an important part of school life that stimulates a spirit of inquiry, curiosity and investigation in students. Homework supports and reinforces the understanding of learning that occurs within the classroom environment.
Homework should be developmentally appropriate and provide students with the opportunity to progress in a well-balanced and holistic way. Homework helps students develop important habits of self-discipline, organization and independence. It also works towards developing critical thinkers, more confident researchers, self-sufficient and reflective students.
To be effective, home learning needs to be part of a wider partnership between parents and school. Westminster depends on parental support for the achievement of its objectives. Parental support and encouragement should enable the student to work independently to allow for development of their self-management skills.
As students develop academically, teachers expect students to take an increasing responsibility for the organization of their own learning. As a student progresses through the phases the homework expectations may increase.
Teachers understand that sometimes events at home may prevent the completion of homework; notification would be appreciated. Parents will be notified by the PYP Coordinator if a student consistently incompletes homework assignments. If students have difficulty understanding an assignment, they should clarify expectations with the teacher.
If absent from school it is the students’ responsibility to complete homework or class work that may have been assigned during their absence.
It is important to bear in mind that students need a balance between homework and out of school activities.
At the beginning of the new academic year, the teachers will outline the Homework Policy at the first official meeting with the parents.
